Laboratory of Aquaculture & Artemia Reference Center (ARC)

Our vision

At the ARC lab, collaboration is the key driver for innovative aquaculture.

Our vision is driven by capacity building, to train future leaders in aquaculture, who can translate scientific knowledge into real-world applications for global food security and outreach to the broader community. We therefore hold three core aspects, which we achieve though securing and leading research projects that address key challenges in sustainable seafood production, aquatic animal health and marine ecosystem conservation:

  • Collaboration with global scientific experts to push the boundaries of knowledge and technological advancements.
  • Partnerships with industry leaders to develop practical, research-driven solutions to improve aquaculture practices and provide research services
  • Coordination of aquaculture educational activities to shape the future of aquaculture.

Our research group is renowed worldwide for its research, education and services on the culture of fish and shellfish larvae. Our lab is coordinator of the interfaculty academic research group 'UGent Aquaculture R&D Consortium'.

It is also the driving force behind BLUEGent, our University's business center for Sustainable Aquaculture. This consortium groups over 150 top scientists to lead the way in hatchery management, genomics and breeding, microbial management, health management, environmental monitoring and aquaculture business management. Through Aquaculture Ghent University, companies, government institutions, consumer and professional organizations have direct access to the technologies, expertise and products that are developed by Ghent University.
