ir. Jonas-Frederik Jans
Jonas-Frederik Jans specializes in backscatter modelling, microwave remote sensing and crop modelling.
Bio
After my master in Bioscience Engineering: Land and Water Management, I started working at the Hydro-Climate Extremes Lab. First, I focused on a project that aimed to characterize the water demand of the province of East-Flanders. AquaCrop (a crop model) was used to analyze the irrigation demand of several water demanding crops on a provincial scale. Afterwards, I started my PhD at H-CEL which tries to unravel the impacts of climate variability on the dynamics of snow water resources. Concretely, I focus on comprehending the sensitivity of several Sentinel-1 data products to snow depth (SD) and Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) accumulation. Furthermore, I also estimate SD and SWE over the European Alps, making use of inversely applied backscatter models such as the Bicontinuous-Dense Medium Radiative Transfer Model (Bic-DMRT). Within my master dissertation I created a methodology to investigate the dynamics of shifting cultivation within the Congo Basin using the archive of Landsat images.
