Are all ultra-processed foods unhealthy?

(28-01-2025) It is becoming increasingly difficult to deny that obesity worldwide is caused by the ever-growing consumption of ultra-processed foods. But a recent study shows that not all ultra-processed foods are created equal.

A recent study highlights that not all ultra-processed foods are unhealthy.

“[...] a prospective cohort study, mapping the medical history and dietary patterns of more than 266,000 individuals in seven European countries using data from the period 1992 to 2000. The international research team did find that there appears to be a significant association between regular consumption of ultra-processed meat products and sugary drinks and an increased risk of developing one or more life-shortening diseases. However, it also found that some types of ultra-processed bread and certain breakfast cereals do not increase health risks and may even help to reduce them.”

Prof. Bruno De Meulenaer comments on this statement in his recent interview in EOS magazine, which was also picked up by VRT news:

“By relying on a flawed definition, you risk confusing people and leading them to draw incorrect conclusions, according to De Meulenaer. If all ultra-processed products are treated the same, the problem will not be solved.”
