Ellen Verwee
PhD Student
Ellen is part of an interdisciplinary project team (Belgian universities, Flanders’ FOOD and industrial partners) which researches the valorization of biomass by separating its macronutrients. Her main focus is visualizing and analyzing the biomasses and their components with advanced microscopic techniques in order to understand their structural organization. These insights will be used to apply more efficient separation methods to extract these nutrients.
(EffSep project: efficient separation of macroconstituents from biomass by combining unit operations based on insights in the structural organization)
Ellen graduated in 2013 as a Master of Science in Industrial Sciences, biochemistry. She obtained her degree at UGent campus Kortrijk (former Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen).
Ellen has 6 years of experience in industry. She worked in the application laboratory of Rousselot (Gent), global leader in gelatin and collagen peptides, where she was working on services and projects concerning the food and pharmaceutical applications of gelatin. She joined Ghent University as a PhD student end of 2019 and is part of both the department of Food Technology, Safety and Health and the Biotechnology department.
