Hanne Vissenaekens
Doctoral student (FWO strategic basic research)
Hanne Vissenaekens studies the bioavailability and bioactivity of dietary polyphenols under physiological and stress conditions, using various human cell line models.
Hanne Vissenaekens performed her master dissertation, entitled ‘Investigating intracellular accumulation of flaovnoids in various cell lines using flow cytometry’, at the Department of Food Technology, Safety and Nutrition at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, Ghent University (2015).
Thereafter, she obtained an MSc in Bio-Science Engineering at the Faculty of Bio-Science Engineering, Ghent University (2015).
In December 2016, Hanne received a doctoral (PhD) grant Strategic Basic Research (SB) of Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO-Vlaanderen).
Hanne Vissenaekens investigates the effect of cellular stress on polyphenol absorption and bioactivity.
More specifically, various in vitro cell models, ranging from monoculture to triple co-culture models, are triggered using multiple stressors and polyphenols are administered. Using a multidisciplinary approach, by combining high throughput cell-based assays with more advanced techniques, Hanne studies how cellular stress can shape the individual’s response to polyphenols.
