Pressure-retarded Osmosis

Pressure retarded osmosis is a technique to generate energy out of osmosis processes. When a less concentrated solution (fresh water) diffuses through a single permeable membrane into a more concentrated solution (sea water) by means of osmosis, a higher pressure will be generated at the sea water side. This pressured stream then feeds a turbine which generates electricity.
