Target audience
This is a general introduction to medical writing for PhD students in a scientific discipline (eg, biological, veterinary, pharmaceutical, medical sciences, biochemistry, biotechnology) at any stage of completion, with an interest in writing and clinical studies.
Students who already have experience with clinical trials or have knowledge of clinical trial protocols and/or clinical study reports are advised to follow the Medical Writing (Advanced) course instead of this basic course.

Topic
This course includes the following topics:
- Introduction to drug development (different phases, key documents, guidelines, and regulations)
- Introduction to medical writing
- Clinical study protocol
- Clinical study report
- Manuscript
- Lean writing (group assignment)
- Experienced Word training (tips and tricks, hands-on practice [bring your own device])
Objectives
The main objectives of this course are:
- learn what medical writing is, and its importance in drug development
- gain insight into 2 key regulatory medical writing documents, including the clinical study protocol and clinical study report
- gain insight in manuscript writing
- understand the principles of lean writing, learn some Word tips and tricks, and how to apply them in (clinical) documents including scientific articles and PhD thesis
