Maarten Van Den Driessche
Maarten Van Den Driessche (°1979) is a full-time professor at the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at Ghent University teaching ‘Theory of Architectural Design’ and ‘Architectural Theory’. He studied in Ghent and Paris (Paris-la-Villette). In 2009 he obtained his PhD Degree. He was a research fellow of Akademie Schloss Sollitude (Stuttgart, Germany), a senior Lecturer at Faculty of Architecture of KULeuven (2010-2018) and visiting Professor in RISEBA Riga, Latvia. He is working as a scholar, curator, critic and an educator.
He published in international journals such as Archis, OASE, Werk, Bauen+ Wohnen, DWR, Pedagogica Historiae, … He has written several books, book chapters and articles on contemporary architectural practices. He was editor of (2005) De school als ontwerpopgave. Schoolarchitectuur in Vlaanderen 1995-2005’ A&S-books, Team Vlaams Bouwmeester. He was editor of the book (2017) ‘Robbrecht en Daem architecten: An Architectural Anthology’ Brussels: Mercatorfonds. A monography on the Ghent based practice GAFPA will be published in January 2019. He is preparing a publication on the work of Bovenbouw Architecten, which will be issued parallel to their monographic Exhibition in de Singel in February 2019 (Antwerp). A travelling exhibition on 20 years Open Call is planned for September 2019 (Ghent, Brussels, Antwerp, ...).
Maarten is founding member of Labo A, a scientific platform at the Ghent University conducting research by design projects. He is a member of Heim Collectief, promoting ‘permanent dwellings for temporary use’ to accommodate the demands of newcomers and refugees.
His current research is concerned with design methodology, architectural criticism, architectural education, architectural drawing and the use of typology in architectural thought
