Biography
Pieter Pauwels holds a Master (2008) and PhD Degree (2012) in Engineering: Architecture from Ghent University. He investigates the usage of information technologies (IT) in the architectural design and construction process. He specifically focuses on the usage of Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools, semantic web technologies and linked data. He is involved in a number of industry-oriented research projects on these topics in construction industry: the usage of BIM for existing buildings (links with laser scanning, geographical information systems, point clouds), management and publication of product manufacturer data, and management of infrastructure data (mainly Belgium and Netherlands). Furthermore, he is actively involved in international standardisation initiatives, namely as the chair Linked Data Working Group (LDWG) in buildingSMART International (bSI), and as the chair of the Linked Building Data Community Group (LBD) in the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
As an assistant professor at Ghent University, he coordinates a large part of the computer-aided design (CAD) curriculum for the Bachelor and Master degrees in Civil Engineering: Architecture (courses: Digital Design Techniques 1 and 3; Informatie Management for Construction Projects) and in UGain (Post-academic Degree Building Information Modelling). Finally, he is the active supervisor of master thesis and PhD thesis projects in any of the above topics.
