FWO Smart Urban Futures project: Floodlabel

Floodlabel:" A smart tool for governance towards flood-resilient cities” (in short: Floodlabel) is a cooperation between Ghent University, Utrecht University and BOKU in Vienna.

The central aim of the floodlabel project is to improve the flood resilience of cities. While on city level adaption measures already exist to reduce the impact of flooding, homeowners are insufficiently aware of the measures they can take. This project targets to raise the risk awareness of homeowners by introducing a Floodlabel for buildings. The label will inform on specific measures for homeowners that reduce the impact of flooding to their households and attempts to trigger the implementation of these measures. The project uses living labs in the three project countries to test the Floodlabel in practice in three phases of the project.

Ghent University is responsible for the design of smart governance arrangements to implement the Floodlabel. In the living labs the functioning of trigger mechanisms, as well as the contextual dependencies towards implementation in governance will be explored. The Belgian cases are located in the Dender and Zenne basin. Together with homeowners, market and local government, the project explores Floodlabel’s contribution to the resilience against flooding.
