Monolithic Time-of-Flight Detectors for PET

The use of (continuous) monolithic crystals has proven to be very successful in preclinical imaging by reaching sub-mm resolution but has not yet been optimised in terms of timing performance in order to do Time-of-Flight PET imaging. In this research we study what the important factors are that affect the time resolution in monolithic scintillators. We look at different readout methods, changing threshold for timestamp determination, different scintillator characteristics etc. The aim of this research is to develop a monolithic PET detector with TOF capabilities that could be implemented in a clinical total-body PET system with high sensitivity and resolution.
