"Brainstorm" Lecture of Dr. Vega: Neutron science for material characterization at LAHN (Argentinian laboratory of neutron beams)

(27-06-2024)

On Tuesday 2 July at 9:30, Dr. Vega will give a brainstorm lecture entitled: Neutron Science for Material Characterization: Opportunities and Challenges at the Argentinian Laboratory of Neutron Beams In this talk, Dr. Vega will show the differences between X-ray material characterizations and their equivalents using neutrons in terms of contrast, penetration, intensity, use of sample environments and activation. The different types of sources will be discussed: spallation and reactors and the facilities currently available worldwide. In this context, the role of the LAHN (Argentine Neutron Beam Laboratory) will be discussed compared to the other neutron laboratories. Emphasis will be placed on imaging techniques: their importance in studying water imbibition in porous materials, hydrogen storage, lithium batteries, etc. Its limitations compared to X-ray techniques in terms of spatial and temporal resolution, and the advantages of using both combined techniques. At the end of the talk, we will have a brainstorming space to share and discuss ideas with participants about possible experiments involving neutron science. Looking forward to seeing you!
