Bingru Xu

Hello! I am Bingru Xu from China and have lived in Ghent for two years. I have completed the business economics preparatory program and master's courses and am preparing for my thesis. I hope my experiences and insights into student life can provide some guidance for those who are about to embark on this journey.

What you can expect from studying at Ghent University?

In my experience, having completed my undergraduate studies in China and a 10-month exchange program in Canada, Ghent University offers a rigorous and compact academic atmosphere. Adaptability to the intensity and pace of studies requires a certain level of resilience and proactive learning. However, this also provides more opportunities for practical group collaboration, contributing significantly to language and communication skills. It's essential to choose a thesis topic early and maintain active communication with your supervisor. Ghent University emphasizes academic freedom and autonomy, so the responsibility for learning and thesis guidance lies with the individual. If you encounter unresponsive supervisors, it's crucial to communicate proactively and seek assistance from the university.

Transitioning to Independent Living

Embarking on your first independent journey abroad is not an easy feat, and renting accommodation is a primary concern.

  1.  Applying for dormitories on the university website in advance is beneficial for exchange students. For most international students, finding private housing is necessary. Having a rental contract allows you to register for an ID, and open a bank account (KBC, Hello Bank, ING),of course, wise and revolut are also good options without id card requirement and manage monthly deposits from the university, and choosing health insurance is crucial for life in Belgium.
  2. Ghent University also has dormitories in Bruges, which may be considered based on the frequency of commuting by train.
  3. Private markets, especially WeChat groups, are commonly used for subletting. However, caution is advised, and thorough checks are necessary to avoid scams.

Want to enrich Campus Life?

Ghent, in my two years in Europe, has been a launching pad for exploring many international destinations. It is one of the safest cities in Europe, offering a pleasant and free lifestyle.

  1. Ghent University prioritizes student life, with the student association VEK organizing vibrant parties and events. This is an excellent opportunity for international students to make friends from around the world.
  2. The Erasmus Students Network (ESNcard.org) is highly recommended for those who enjoy traveling and making friends. It provides opportunities to travel with students across Europe and offers discounts on RYANAIR and FLIBCO, facilitating convenient travel within Europe.
  3. For sports enthusiasts, Ghent University and CVO offer various activities. Additionally, joining dance classes or clubs can be a unique experience.
  4. Supermarkets like Albert Heijn, Colruyt, and Delhaize make daily life convenient.

Welcome to Ghent University

Ghent is a culturally diverse city, and its small size creates a welcoming and non-discriminatory environment. If you wish to integrate into local life, the University Language Center (UTC) offers affordable language courses in Dutch, French, and German.

In the initial application season, Laura Hack left a profound impression on me. She promptly and accurately answered all inquiries, providing maximum assistance. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact her actively.

I must admit that Ghent's course structure and intensity are more demanding than many Chinese universities at the graduate level. Graduating requires considerable effort and dedication. For those still contemplating coming to Ghent, congratulations on choosing a fantastic university. Enjoy your time here, and you will gain a lot!

I hope this information is helpful.
