Meet The Expert session with Anaïs Tack and Detmar Meurers on Intelligent Computer-Assisted Language Learning and its role in (language) education.

Large Language Models and ICALL: A Flirt, a Romance or a Match Made in Heaven? (Anaïs Tack, KU Leuven)

In her talk, Dr. Tack will tackle topics such as large language models, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), and the AI Act launched by the European Union. How does this wealth of new opportunities affect the field of (computer-assisted) language education (and its policy makers)? How can we address the challenges that come with it?

Sustainably Developing Language Technology for Language Learning by Connecting it to Second Language Acquisition Research (Detmar Meurers, Universität Tübingen)

In his talk, Prof. Dr. Meurers will argue that – to fulfil the high hopes raised by language technology and AI – it is crucial that ICALL environments systematically ground their development in the general learning mechanisms and language learning-specific mechanisms established in psychology and second language acquisition (SLA) research.
