In this seminar, prof Paola Ugolini examines the notions of sincerity and dissimulation in early modern Italian culture.

Prof Ugolini's lecture investigates the notion of sincerity as a moral value in early modern Italy, as well as the contrast between the urge for sincerity and the need for simulation and dissimulation that characterized early modern society. It also explores the claims of sincerity expressed by the authors of early modern scientific texts, and how this intersects with the idea of accessing the secrets of Nature.

The event shall take the form of a discussion seminar. It is primarily aimed at PhD students in the fields of literary studies and the history of science, but it also envisions and welcomes the participation of MA students and senior scholars from other research fields.
