Prof. Serge Van Calenbergh graduated in pharmaceutical sciences in 1991 at the UGent and obtained his PhD from the same institution in 1995 with Prof. Piet Herdewijn. He spent the first year of his doctoral training at the Laboratory for Medicinal Chemistry of the Rega Institute in Leuven. In 1996-1997 he was a NIH-funded post-doctoral fellow at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Iowa in Iowa City with Prof. Vasu Nair. In October 1999 he became professor in Medicinal Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the UGent . His main research interests include drug design for neglected diseases such as TB and malaria. From a chemical point of view his group is particularly engaged in nucleoside, phosphonate, glycosphingolipid and bioconjugate chemistry. His publications include 15 contributions to J. Med. Chem. His teaching responsibilities comprise courses in medicinal chemistry and drug design.
He is promoter/co-ordinator of DISCOVERe, a valorisation consortium of the UGent industrial research fund (IOF) that focuses on early academic drug discovery of small molecules.
