Biography
Carlota Muñoz graduated as chemist in 2022 from Ghent University where she obtained her Master in (Bio)Organic and Polymer Chemistry. For her Master's thesis, she evaluated the synthesis of peptide containing macrocycles of kojibiose derivatives. She started working at Janssen Pharmaceuticals in the Analytical Department to give support to other R&D departments. In 2024, she started her PhD on the project of additive manufacturing for novel ways of delivering oral dosage forms.
Summary of Research Project
Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is anticipated to be a gamechanger in the pharmaceutical industry for the development and manufacturing of multiple diverse dosage forms. Among these, tablets are by far the most widely diffused. AM promises to be an enabler for the acceleration of medicines development, the individualization of medical treatment according to patients’ needs and the simplification of dosing regimens. This project aims to understand the real capabilities and limitations of extrusion-based additive manufacturing, identifying the optimal feedstock characteristics and target a wider formulation window. The ultimate goal is to investigate AM for tablets from a pharma company perspective, hence mapping out strategies to successfully incorporate 3D printing of tablets in both R&D and commercial supply environments.
