The research unit of Exercise Physiology and Sports Nutrition performs research towards acute and chronic adaptations of the human body to exercise and sports. The available expertise spans the range between fundamental cellular physiology and applied sports physiology, equally including studies on experimental animal tissues as well as on the elite athlete.

The research group is internationally well recognized for its expertise on:

  • Oxygen uptake kinetics during onset of exercise, both in athletes as in specific patients groups (e.g. mitochondrial myopathies)
  • The physiological role of carnosine in skeletal muscle metabolism, including the application of beta-alanine supplementation in sports nutrition
  • The Muscle Talent scan: a non-invasive estimation method for muscle fiber type composition by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS)
  • Sports physiology in relation to aquatic sports (e.g. sailing, rowing) and team sports
