Career and job opportunities
A degree in archaeology is a professional degree. Graduates end up in research in universities, museums and other scientific institutions and are responsible for the management of the archaeological and cultural heritage in municipal, regional, provincial and Flemish services. Commercial archaeological companies and archaeological study centres responsible for environmental assessments are potential employment opportunities for archaeologists. We note that the trained archaeologists in Flanders are also highly sought after in other countries (e.g. the Netherlands and France).
A Ghent University degree in archaeology also provides access to a wide variety of other professions. The ability to work effectively within a team as well as independently, the general education and the research and analytical skills are highly valued by employers. Graduates in archaeology go on to work in the press and media world, the cultural sector, in administration and in many other areas of the labour market.
