Course reserves
What is a Course Reserve?
The term "Course Reserve" refers to material that is set aside so that it is easily and readily available for students of a particular course or courses. Items on Course Reserves are placed there at the request of the lecturer(s).
Lecturers associated with the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy can submit items
- from the ‘paper’ collection of the Faculty Library of Arts and Philosophy and/or
- from the ‘paper’ collection of the Book Tower and/or
- from the digital UGent library collection
to be made available to students through Course Reserves.
These can be items that are part of the compulsory literature in their course, linked to a research topic or a current teaching theme....
Where can I find the Course Reserves?
After the creation of the requested Course Reserves, lecturers receive a PDF file, containing a link to the available ‘paper/physical’ and digital items on their Course Reserves. They can share this document with students via their course in the electronic learning platform Ufora.
On the Course Reserves of the Faculty Library of Arts and Philosophy (Rozier 44), in the Loveling reading room near the Loveling consultation desk (ground floor), physical items from the faculty library collection are arranged by academic year and course.
As a lecturer, how do I request Course Reserves?
Via this form, lecturers can list the books (or other items) to be added to their Course Reserves. Please fill in the requested fields accurately and be sure to mention the title and location number in the library. The location number of an e-publication may be referred to as ‘E-BOOK’.
If you have already submitted a list of books in previous academic years, you will see an overview of these in the ‘requests’ tab on the Sharepoint site. This is also where you can make any changes, delete or add books, ...
If you would like a book back on the course reserves, just add ‘CP 2024-2025’ in the comments.
FAQ
As a lecturer, I want to put a book on the Course Reserves but the book is not available in the collection of the Faculty Library of Arts and Philosophy. Is this possible?
If you want to put a book on the Course Reserves that is not yet available in the collection, you can order them as a lecturer via the online order module. Please state clearly in the comments field that this is an order for the Course Reserves AC. 2024-2025 (stating the official name of the corresponding course unit) and place a check mark in the rush order procedure. As soon as the item is purchased and available, it will be added to the Course Reserves.
As a lecturer, what works can I request to be put on my Course Reserves?
- Physical course materials from the collection of the Faculty Library of Arts and Philosophy (including books, CD-ROM/DVD ...) are available on the Course Reserves in the Loveling reading room (Rozier 44 - ground floor) near the Loveling consultation desk, organised by academic year and course.
- Physical course materials from the Book Tower collection are displayed on Course Reserves in the reading room in Book Tower (Rozier 9), arranged by academic year and course.
- E-publications (via lib.ugent.be)
Physical items from collections of other libraries cannot be included on the Course Reserves.
How are digital items added to a Course Reserve?
Publications that are only available electronically are referred to with a link in the PDF overview posted by the lecturer on Ufora. E-books that are part of a paying agreement between UGent and the publisher can only be consulted within the UGent domain (login required). Since the availability of a digital item may be bound by terms of current subscriptions, it is advised to download this item as soon as possible via the link provided.
As a lecturer, can I provide my students with a digital version of a physical Course Reserve?
In certain cases, it is possible to digitize a paper item on the Course Reserve and make it available to students. To do this, you can contact the staff of the Faculty Library of Arts and Philosophy as a lecturer at collegeplank.flw@ugent.be.
How long can a student lend a book, DVD, ... from the Course Reserves?
Depending on the number of students in the course, among other things, the lecturer decides on the length of the loan period for items placed on the Course Reserves. The loan period is visible on the label of the Course Reserve and can also be consulted in the catalogue. Course Reserves in the Faculty Library of Arts and Philosophy can be either ‘no loan’ (i.e. only consultable in the reading room on site), ‘very short loan’ (1 day) or ‘short loan’ (1 week).
