Institute for Early Modern History
Members of this Institute approach the Early Modern Times (ca. 1500 – 1800) as a period of fault lines and transformations. We do so from a variety of perspectives: social, economic, demographic, political, institutional, cultural and science philosophical methods are being applied. Our research is very much based on a long term and interdisciplinary approach (using knowledge and methods applied in economics, law history, medical history, literature history, arts history and philosophy, among others). We focus mainly on the Southern Low Countries, but from changing research angles: European continent vs. overseas territories, city vs. countryside, government vs. citizens, elite groups vs. common people, groups vs. individuals.
