Lecture - From beguinages to Simone Guillissen-Hoa (1916-1996): a gender perspective of space and history

This lecture "From beguinages to Simone Guillissen-Hoa (1916-1996) : a gender perspective of space and history" is given by Apolline Vranken in the context of the joker week ‘Regard’ of Department Architecture of UGent. This lecture is about a balance between spatial and narrative gender tools. Apolline will give some examples of feminist architecture, practices and historical perspective. In a feminist intersectional perspective, her talk will be about gender mainly but also about how to fight racism, classism, ableism, ageism, etc.

BIO:

Since 2014 Apolline Vranken has been involved in the Cercle Féministe de l'ULB and is passionate about questions regarding gender relations in space and urban equality. She investigates these themes in her final work Des béguinages à l'architecture féministe published by the Université des Femmes in 2018. Apolline Vranken graduated in architecture in 2017 and worked for more than two years as a project manager for the non-profit organisation L'Ilot-Sortir du sans-abrime and as an architect. With the platform L'architecture qui dégenre that she founded in 2018, she is also the initiator of the Belgian edition of the Journées du Matrimoine. Today, she is a FRESH-FNRS doctoral researcher in the Hortence laboratory of the Faculty of Architecture La Cambre-Horta ULB. Her research focuses on the methodologies of a feminist history of modern architecture through the analysis of the career, the work and the legacy of Simone Guillissen-Hoa, one of the first female architects in Belgium.
