Insights into word recognition processes from modeling of perceptual and decisional processes.

It is a truism that all models are ultimately incorrect; however, we argue that they can lead to productive research programs inside the lab and also in the real world. In this presentation I discuss the work that our group has performed over the last few years. We have applied perception and decision making mathematical models (the overlap model and the diffusion model) to word recognition research. The principles that emerge from these models have led to experimental work that has explored a range of issues ranging from analysis of the micro-structure of laboratory tasks, to work with dyslexics and with braille readers.
