Positioning tests and entrance examinations

Mandatory positioning tests

Many study programmes offer a positioning test, some programmes have a mandatory positioning test (‘starttoets’).
This means that you must take part in the test in order to enrol.
Both type of tests consist of multiple choice questions and test your mathematical and scientific skills and knowledge in relation to the expected entry level of the specific bachelor’s programme. Based on your results, you will be able to compare your skills and knowledge with other participants.

Note: all tests are available in Dutch only. All bachelor’s programmes at Ghent University are taught in Dutch.

Participation in a positioning test is mandatory for the following bachelor’s programmes:

  • Biomedical sciences
  • Engineering sciences: architecture
  • Engineering sciences
  • Industrial engineer: bio-industrial sciences
  • Bio-engineering sciences
  • Industrial engineer: life sciences
  • Pharmaceutical sciences
  • Physics and astronomy
  • Industrial sciences
  • Mathematics

The results on your positioning test is not binding. Even if you do not pass the test, or participate in a different positioning test, you will be allowed to enrol in the bachelor's programme.
In that case however, you will need to follow a mandatory remedial course. This course too is available in Dutch only.

Timely registration is mandatory. Check the deadlines.

Optional positioning tests

Participation in a positioning test is optional but highly recommended ('ijkingstoets') for the following bachelor's programmes:

  • Biochemistry and biotechnology
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Economics
  • Geography and geomatics
  • Geology
  • Business engineering
  • Business economics
