Personalia

Daniel Biltereyst is Professor in Film and Media Studies at the Department of Communication Studies, Ghent University, Belgium, where he teaches film and media history, and cultural media studies. Besides being Director of the Centre for Cinema and Media Studies (CIMS) and an elected member of the Academia Europaea, he is also linked to the HoMER network. He is the main supervisor of the Hercules/FWO-funded Cinema Ecosystem (CINECOS) project, aiming at building an open access data platform for cinema history in Flanders and Belgium (2018-24, see Cinema Belgica). He’s the supervisor of the Belgian part of the H2020 EUMEPLAT project (European Media Platforms, 2021-24), the H2020 project REBOOT (Reviving, boosting, optimising and transforming European film competitiveness, 2023-26), and the EU-funded cinema heritage project ‘Dialogue for Cinema as Cultural Heritage in Adana’. Biltereyst is involved in various historical cinemagoing projects (see Cinema City Cultures, curated with Ph. Meers). He is also involved as a film programmer in the Ghent University’s film club Film-Plateau.

Biltereyst is (co-)editor of several volumes and theme issues, including Explorations in New Cinema History (2011, with R. Maltby and Ph. Meers), Cinema, Audiences and Modernity (2012, with R. Maltby and Ph. Meers), Silencing Cinema: Film Censorship around the World (2013, with R. Vande Winkel), Moralizing Cinema: Film, Catholicism, and Power (2015, with D. Treveri Gennari), a special issue on cinemagoing and memory studies for Memory Studies (2017, with A. Kuhn and Ph. Meers), Routledge Companion to New Cinema History (2019, with R. Maltby and Ph. Meers), Mapping Movie Magazines (2020, with Lies Van de Vijver), New Perspectives on Early Cinema History (2022, with M. Slugan, BAFTSS runner-up award for best edited volume), Cinema in the Arab World: New Histories, New Approaches (2023, Bloomsbury, with I. Elsaket and Ph. Meers, receiver of the BAFTSS runner-up award for best edited volume), and a theme issue on recent trends in European cinema for Cinéma & Cie (2023, with E. Gipponi and A. Miconi).

He published a monograph on the history of film/cinema censorship in Belgium (Verboden beelden: De verborgen geschiedenis van filmcensuur in België, 2020, in Dutch) and made a documentary with Bruno Mestdagh on film cuttings (Ongezien/invisible, 2020, Cinematek). He is now working on the Screening Censorship Companion (University of Exeter Press, with E. Mathijs). He also extensively published in edited volumes and academic journals like Cultural Studies, European Journal of Cultural Studies, Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television, Memory Studies, and Screen.

Biltereyst supervised more than 20 doctoral research projects, mostly in the field of his expertise: film and media history, historical media audience research, media censorship and controversy, and new cinema history.
