Two new papers published on the representation of journalism in fiction

During the summer, CJS-member Maxine De Wulf Helskens published two new papers as part of her PhD on the representation of journalism in fiction.

The first study looks at five popular Flemish TV series and how they depict journalism. Unlike many American fiction, these series portray journalism in a negative light, focusing more on commercial interests than the public good. They suggest that journalists and government officials should work together to serve society better. The study also found that gender stereotypes are still present in these series, highlighting the need for more diverse representations in Flemish fiction. Read the full paper here.

The second publication, a collaboration with fellow PhD student Femke De Sutter, dives into the movie 'The French Dispatch' and how it shows the intersection of journalism and age. The movie paints a picture of journalists as somewhat isolated, especially older women, who are portrayed as “old maids.” It also touches on generational conflicts, particularly around journalistic neutrality, and explores the role of a veteran editor who fights to maintain journalistic integrity against commercial pressures. The film gives a nostalgic view of journalism as it used to be. Read the full paper here.
