Impact of generative AI on journalism employment
Supervisor
Generative AI is increasingly capable of automating tasks traditionally performed by journalists, such as identifying unique angles for news stories, analyzing data, and drafting articles. This shift has sparked concerns within the industry about its potential consequences - ranging from the need for journalists to acquire new skills and adapt to evolving roles, to the possibility of job losses.
This project examines the impact of generative AI on the journalism profession, with a particular focus on how it influences perceptions of job satisfaction and future career pathways. The insights gathered will be crucial for shaping policies that support a resilient and future-ready news industry while safeguarding the quality of news coverage. Moreover, understanding the skills and knowledge required in an AI-driven media landscape is essential for equipping current and aspiring journalists to thrive in their careers. This research aims to inform the development of educational programs and training initiatives tailored to these emerging needs.
Commissioned by the Flemish Association of Journalists, the study will involve approximately 20 interviews conducted in the spring of 2025 with employees from key Flemish newsrooms, including the public broadcaster, DPG Media, Mediahuis, Roularta, Mediafin, and Media 21. The findings will be shared by summer 2025.
