Ellen Thorisaen is a PhD fellow affiliated with both the Department of Communication Sciences (CJS) and the Department of Translation, Interpretation and Communication at Ghent University. She holds a Master’s degree in Communication Sciences (Free University of Brussels, 2021), a Master’s degree in Journalism (Ghent University, 2022) and a postgraduate degree in International Research journalism (Thomas More, 2024).

For her master's theses, Ellen conducted research on the representation of gender roles in film musicals using narrative content analysis, and examined media portrayals of the Bart De Pauw sexual misconduct case through critical discourse analysis.

Prior to beginning her doctoral studies, Ellen gained professional experience as a news producer and journalist at Trends Kanaal Z, Roularta’s economic and business television channel. In October 2024, she started her PhD under the supervision of prof. Dr. Sarah Van Leuven and prof. Dr. Catherine Bouko. Her research investigates the representations of Flanders and French-speaking Belgium in both TV and written news, focusing on content from VRT, VTM, RTBF, RTL.
