The Department of Conflict and Development Studies is not able to award grants, scholarships or financial help for doctoral studies.
Admission: how to apply?
General criteria
For the admission of finalizing the diploma of doctorate (Ph. D. degree) a student must be in possession of one of the following diplomas delivered by a Flemish University for at least two years:
- A diploma of the second cycle of an academic curricula (opleiding)
- A diploma of civil engineer or licence (licentie) granted by the Royal Military School in Brussels
- A diploma of licence in commercial sciences or commerce engineering granted by an institution of higher education of the long type
- For foreign institutions, a diploma that is approved by the university as an equivalent to a Flemish degree, may be considered as sufficient for admission. For both Belgian and foreign students, applying for a doctoral programme implies 2 different stages.
- Candidates with a foreign master degree will be evaluated individually regarding their academic background and competences in relation to carry out scientific research.
Stage 1
- Write a research proposal that falls within the focus, aims and research priorities of the Department of Conflict and Development Studies.
- Send the application with a curriculum vitae to:

- Each month the members of the Department will study the incoming proposals and reply.
- The Centre can reject, hold or ask to rewrite every proposal.
- If the project is accepted the student can then proceed to stage 2
Stage 2 for Belgian applicants
- Send a complete application form to: The Faculty of Political and Social Science, Faculty Council / Admissions Commission, Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat 41, 9000 Ghent
- The Commission and Faculty Board judge on the final admission
- If you are admitted you can than proceed to enrol in university by way of payment to the central administration.
Stage 2 for foreign applicants
- A complete application (project, diploma, curriculum vitae) should be sent to: Central Student Administration, Rectorate, Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat 25, B-9000 Gent, Belgium.
Contact: admission.studadmin@UGent.be - The central administration has the task to see whether the non-Belgian diploma is equal to the Belgian standards. If the diploma is accepted, the application is sent to the faculty of Political and Social Science.
