Ward Maréchal

Biography

Ward Maréchal is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at Ghent University. In 2024, he earned his master's degree in Political Science, focusing on national politics. His master’s thesis examined the mobilization of local political parties during referendums in Flanders. Currently, Ward is conducting research for his dissertation on the policy differences among sub-states within a federal system, with a particular emphasis on Belgium. He aims to investigate whether one of the primary justifications for adopting federalism—namely, the ability for distinct regions with diverse needs to implement tailored policies—is realized in practice. His main research interests are federalism, state reforms and party behaviour. Ward will also provide support in several courses, including “Actual Political Problems,” and “Belgian Federalism.” and the internship programme.
