Prof. dr. Sven Biscop
I read political sciences and obtained my PhD at Ghent University, where today I am a professor, lecturing on strategy and the foreign policies of Belgium and the EU. In addition, I am the director of the Europe in the World programme at the Egmont – Royal Institute for International Relations in Brussels, the think-tank associated with the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2015, on the occasion of its tenth anniversary, I was made an Honorary Fellow of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC), an agency of the EU where I lecture for diplomats, military and officials from all EU Member States. I am also a regular speaker at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels and at various staff colleges in Europe and America, as well as at the People’s University of China in Beijing, where I am a Senior Research Associate. I chair the jury of the annual Global Strategy PhD Prize, awarded by Egmont and the ESDC. I am proud to have been honoured with the cross of Commander in the Order of the Crown (Belgium) and the Grand Decoration of Honour (Austria), and to have been elected a member of the Royal Academy of Overseas Sciences of Belgium. I live in Brussels with my husband Aberu, amidst a great many books, military paraphernalia, and chinoiseries. Unfortunately we travel too often to keep a cat.
