Aranka Ballering
Status: Postdoc researcher
Aranka Ballering is a postdoctoral researcher at the University Medical Center Groningen and a visiting researcher at Ghent University. Aranka’s background lies in biomedical sciences and international public health. Her PhD research (cum laude) focused on the sex and gender differences in the illness trajectories of people with common somatic symptoms.
Aranka’s research aims to understand persistent somatic symptoms from a gendered biopsychosocial perspective. She has a special interest in how to operationalize sex and gender in epidemiology, intersectionality, health-related stigma, and the use of traditional medicine in relation to persistent somatic symptoms.
In addition to conducting research, Aranka is committed to bring research results beyond the academic ivory tower. Therefore, she is a member of the Hoe?Zo!-show, a scientific theatre show that aims to foster children’s scientific curiosity and a Face of Science for the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
