Julie Wartell, lecturer at the University of California, San Diego, and expert in crime prevention, offers insights into applying environmental criminology.

This interactive workshop, led by Julie Wartell, a continuing lecturer and research associate at the University of California, San Diego, explores how environmental criminology can generate real-world impact on crime and anti-social behavior issues. Wartell specializes in urban planning, crime prevention, and GIS. With over 25 years of experience and more than 40 publications, her research has been applied globally by academics and professionals.

The workshop addresses a crucial gap: while most criminology and law PhD graduates move into roles within governmental agencies, NGOs, and private organizations, they often lack the tools to bridge academic knowledge with practical application.

The session will cover:

  • Key theories and concepts in environmental criminology.
  • A historical perspective on implementing these ideas within policing.
  • Challenges faced by environmental criminologists in creating real-world impact.

Participants will examine case studies showcasing the application of these theories to diverse crime problems, such as gun violence, mental health-related service calls, issues surrounding homeless encampments, and sexual assaults linked to bars.

The workshop will conclude with a Q&A, giving students the opportunity to engage directly with these topics. By the end, participants will have gained a foundational understanding of how to translate scientific research in environmental criminology into practical knowledge and actionable insights relevant to crime analysts and professionals in the criminal justice system.
