Alina Cherviatsova

Dr. Alina Cherviatsova is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research Fellow at the Human Rights Center, Programme for Studies on Human Rights in Contex, Ghent University. Prior to this, Dr. Cherviatsova was an associate professor for comparative public law, human rights, and international law of the V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (Ukraine) and a coordinator of three Jean Monnet Modules. Dr. Cherviatsova had research fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Max Planck Institute of European Legal History, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public and International Law, the University of Turin.

Her research project ‘To Destroy or to Preserve? Monuments, Law and Democracy in Europe’ [MELoDYE] is aimed to think about monuments and their controversies in the context of democracy asking the question: what should be the legal standards for public commemorative practices to ensure free speech, the rule of law, and solidarity? Her research interests include international law, comparative constitutional law, human rights, with a special emphasis on freedom of speech, legal regulation of collective memories (memorial laws), soviet and post-soviet studies.
