First GIPLI CAFÉ triggers large turnout
(12-11-2024) Last Friday, November 8, 2024, the pilot edition of GIPLI CAFÉ took place. The new event at the faculty in Ghent attracted around thirty attendees, mainly from the legal profession and judiciary.
The concept of GIPLI CAFÉ is very straight-forward: a low-threshold roundtable discussion on Friday evening. Two speakers introduce their own topic, followed by discussion. Each topic is limited to a maximum of one hour. No recordings, no livestream, no registration fee. The entire event is aimed at IP practitioners and is conducted in Dutch.
For the first edition, we were happy to host Jeroen Muyldermans, who highlighted the many open questions that remain around the concept of "due cause" as a negative criterion for trademark infringements under sub (c) and (d). Professor Simon Geiregat then reminded attendees of the burden of proof when it comes to the exhaustion doctrine, framed some recent EU judgements, and fired a number of open questions to the participants.
After the interactive session, a considerable part of the audience also found their way to a nearby bar for an afterwork chat.
Organizer Simon Geiregat is very happy about this first edition. GIPLI will soon announce two new editions for the first half of 2025. One will focus on patent law, while the other session will address copyright-related topics.
