(11-04-2025) This week, GIPLI was represented at a conference on AI and law and a PhD seminar at the Université de Montréal. This was made possible thanks to a joint project between Québec and the Flemish Government.

Simon Geiregat and Michiel Roels received a heartfelt welcome at the Law Faculty of the Université de Montréal in chilly but beautiful Québec. On Thursday, 10 April, Professor Geiregat participated in a full-day colloquium on legal aspects of artificial intelligence (AI) – "beyond the hype". During the morning panel on copyright, he held a a 30-minute pitch presentation on copyright protectability of the output of generative AI systems. After the conference, the Representative of the Flemish Government at the Embassy of Belgium in Canada and the United States kindly invited all the attendees to an evening cocktail.

On Friday, 11 April, FWO PhD candidate Michiel Roels presented his research on the legal protection of artistic styles at a seminar for PhD candidates of the Université de Montréal Faculty of Law. He and his colleagues then engaged in fruitful discussions, guided by Professors Ysolde Gendreau, Nicolas Vermeys and Simon Geiregat. Next week, the GIPLI team will continue its stay in Montréal to conduct research and meet fellow-researchers.

The conference, seminar and research stay were made possible, in part, thanks to the funding of the government of Flanders in the framework of a project for the establishment and expansion of trans-Atlantic connections between Flanders and the province of Québec.
