Simon Geiregat © Julie Kerckaert 2023Meet Prof. Dr. Simon Geiregat, a dedicated full-time lecturer specialising in intellectual property law. His primary focus lies in the intricacies of copyright and neighbouring rights law, complemented by publications on trade mark law and on consumer protection and commercial practices. Prof. Geiregat's passion extends to addressing the evolving challenges posed by digitalisation in private law, with a keen interest in the ongoing debates surrounding artificial intelligence and the "ownership" of non-personal data.

Equipped with a Master's in Law from Ghent University (2015) and an Advanced Master's in IP & IT Law from KU Leuven (2017), Prof. Geiregat embarked on an extensive academic journey. From 2015 to 2019, he prepared his doctoral dissertation under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Reinhard Steennot and Prof. Dr. Hendrik Vanhees, successfully defending it in May 2019 at Ghent University. He was subsequently awarded an FWO Postdoc Scholarship. Between 2021 and 2023, Prof. Geiregat contributed his expertise to various institutions, including Ghent University, Universiteit Leiden, the University of Antwerp, and KU Leuven, holding positions as a lecturer. He further enriched his academic experience with a ten-month postdoctoral stint at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition.

In 2023, Simon Geiregat was appointed as a fulltime assistant professor at Ghent University and as a parttime assistant professor at Tilburg University. He teaches various intellectual property law courses at both universities. In addition, he is an expert member at the Flanders AI Academy, and actively engages in presenting contemporary topics, showcasing his expertise not only locally but also on the international stage.
