Short Bio

Judith Vermeulen is a voluntary postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Law and Criminology at Ghent University, Belgium. There, she is a member of the Law & Technology research group, the Human Rights Centre and PIXLES (Privacy, Information Exchange, Law Enforcement and Surveillance). Her research interests include human rights law, European law, media law, data protection law and information law.

Judith obtained her PhD in July 2022 after she successfully defended her doctoral thesis “The Algorithmic State of Mind: A Human Rights Frame for Governing News Recommendation”. The main research aim was to establish how existing legal rules, including human rights, apply to news recommendation practices and whether they require further regulation. The research formed part of the interdisciplinary research project #NewsDNA, which was funded by the Special Research Fund of Ghent University. Its primary goal was to develop and test an algorithm that uses news diversity as a key driver for personalised news recommendation.

Judith obtained her Master’s degree in Law at Ghent University (2017) and an LLM in European Law at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium (2018).
