Short history of the Ghent Legal History Institute
The Ghent Legal History Institute is the heir of a rich tradition. From the start in 1817 legal history and Roman law have been taught in Ghent and many of the Ghent professors have become famous in the field. The most important society for the study of the law of antiquity, the Société internationale Fernand De Visscher pour l’histoire des droits de l’antiquité, is still named after Fernand De Visscher (1885-1964), who started his career as a professor in Ghent in 1914.
