International mobility at Ghent University: safe and responsible
Ghent University is committed to making international mobility as safe and responsible as possible. Here's what you need to know:
Registration in Oasis
According to Article 46 §4 of the Education and Examination Regulations, all Ghent University students who follow part of their programme abroad (such as courses at a foreign institution, internships, research for the master's thesis, compulsory study trips, etc.) must register in time as an exchange student via Oasis. This also applies to students who do not receive funding from Ghent University. Without registration before the first Monday of the month prior to your departure, you will not be allowed to go abroad.
Safety framework
Ghent University bases its travel advice on formal and informal government advice, country information and other international sources. This takes into account:
The general security situation (political situation, civil unrest, natural disasters, etc.).
The health situation and access to medical care (such as Ebola, COVID-19, limited hospital infrastructure).
Strict measures or events that restrict freedom of movement (state of emergency, curfew, prolonged strikes, lockdowns).
The access of Belgian/other residents to a particular country or territory.
The academic offer at partner institutions or internships (such as online classes only, university strikes).
Travelling to risk areas
If you travel to a risk area, you have to take extra steps before final approval. This is possible if your exchange has an academic added value. Ask your FCI staff member for a travel risk form for this. Fill this in and describe the possible risks in the country or region where you are staying. Think of crime, political unrest, climatic conditions, diseases, inadequate health care, transport, etc. Discuss this with the FCI staff member of your faculty.
Decision deadlines
For study exchanges (courses) in 2024-2025) the decisions were already given.
For study exchanges (courses) in 2025-2026: Decisions for departure in the first semester will be taken in April 2025, and for departure in the second semester in October 2025.
For internships, research, master's thesis, fieldwork in high-risk destinations: Decisions will be made no later than the first Monday of the month prior to your departure.
