Japan in een kijkdoos: een perfecte miniatuurwereld waarin het verleden bewaard is gebleven en altijd onveranderlijk is. Een wereld die zich aan de toeschouwer presenteert als een harmonieus natuurlandschap van Fuji-san, tempels en geisha. Naast dit ‘exotische paradijs’ verschijnen in de kijkdoos beelden van de moderniteit; samengesteld uit topoi als spitstechnologie, megasteden, emotionele onverschilligheid, sociaal isolement, zelfmoord, enz. Terwijl de vervorming van het goed bewaard gebleven harmonieuze beeld van een traditioneel Japan wordt ervaren als breuk, bevestigt en voedt het ook een meta- stereotype: Japan is anders en kan – in zijn verschil – niet begrepen worden door 'de anderen'. Het fotoproject "The Other Japan" gaat op zoek naar de visuele "ander" achter het "andere" Japan. De foto's die voor deze tentoonstelling zijn geselecteerd, werden gemaakt door studenten van de afdeling Japanse Taal en Cultuur tijdens hun langdurige uitwisseling in steden als Kanazawa, Kobe, Fukuoka. Ze weerspiegelen de ingebedde kijk op een cultuur die 'plaatsmythes' detecteert en deconstrueert en verder gaat dan de oppervlakkige toeristische blik.
