Photogrammetry
For generating 3D models of specimens, we also use photogrammetry. This relies on 2D images taken with any kind of digital camera, which are then aligned and positioned in 3D space to generate a 3D mesh that also includes a texture map. We use Agisoft Photoscan software for generating the 3D models. The software can also be used to position 3D landmarks onto a mesh, which can then be used for 3D shape analysis (see Gabelaia et al., 2018 for a 3D shape analysis on Darevskia lizards using this approach).
