Research units
The department of Biotechnology consists of 5 research units, each focussing on different topics :
- The Center for Microbial Ecology and Technology studies microbial communities and interactions to better understand and steer ecological processes
- The Centre for Synthetic Biology artificially (re)designs biological systems for practical applications
- The Centre for Industrial Biotechnology and Biocatalysis uses white biotechnology approaches to develop bio-based production processes for high-value, complex chemical compounds, using microbial cell factories
- The research unit Molecular Biotechnology is active in the area of biotechnology on eukaryotic cells
- The research unit Schoonmeersen focusses on applied biotechnology research
