Master of Science in Environmental Science and Technology
Major: Resource Recovery Technology
Because
At the onset of the 21st century we are confronted with ramping environmental problems & resource scarcity, driven by an ever-growing global population and boosted material consumption. In a world with finite resources, making the best possible use of them is paramount to our survival and protection of our environment. The recovery of resources from waste is a critical part of the so-called circular economy model. By “cycling” water, nutrients, metals, energy, etc. we not only reduce waste generation, but minimize the extraction of virgin resources from our planet.
If you are passionate to learn how to extract previous resources from waste streams to enable a fully circular society, studying Resource recovery technology at Ghent University (Belgium) is exactly what you are looking for.
Become an expert
With this specialization study, you will:
- Gain a broad perspective on the technical, economic, social challenges of resource recovery
- Obtain in-depth knowledge about state-of-the-art and emerging technologies for the recovery of resources from waste streams. You will also learn how to engineer resource recovery process units, as well as how to model and control them.
- Be able to propose the best possible resource recovery “train” for a given waste stream.
- Be able to quantify the environmental impact of a given technology or process.
- Comprehend the key non-technological drivers and challenges for resource recovery, including economics, social acceptance, and policy.
Benefit
- You can choose to major and perform thesis research in Resource recovery technology during the entire second year of the two-year master program in Environmental Science and Technology.
- The teaching staff of this program is dedicated to train a new generation of professionals that is ready to provide creative, sustainable and workable solutions for increasingly complex and wicked environmental problems, from local to global scale, both in developed and developing economies, from oceans to mega-cities, duly accounting for the driving forces of global climate change.
- Ghent University is a top 100 university on the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (66th overall, 37th for life sciences) and top 100 for environmental studies on the QS top universities ranking.
- The teaching staff of this master program has been in involved in worldwide renowned research in the area of resource recovery technologies, including several members of the Center for Advanced Process Technology For Urban Resource Recovery (https://capture-resources.be/) and the Biorefine cluster Europe.
