Guidance master's dissertation

You are entitled to get active supervision and guidance from your tutor and promotor

What can you expect of your tutor?

  • Your tutor is your first point of contact for questions/problems.
  • You discuss with your tutor the planning of the dissertation work and agree on deadlines.
  • Your tutor ensures that the proposed time for field/lab work falls within the available study time.
  • Your tutor ensures that in all phases of the master's dissertation process, the principles of scientific integrity are correctly applied.
  • You use Galileo as your basic platform for scientific communication (writing and speaking). Your tutor guides you through the process and gives feedback.
  • Your tutor supports you throughout the master's dissertation process. This means that the tutor makes suggestions and gives advice at every stage of the realisation, e.g. on how to find relevant literature, on how to set up the research project’s goal and design its methodology, or on critically discussing the submitted texts.
  • As a student, you always are responsible for the content of your master's dissertation.
  • In case of any problems during the supervision of the student, the tutor will report this to the promotor in good time.

What can you expect of your promotor?

  • Your promotor has the final scientific responsibility for the entire master's dissertation process (supervision, ...).
  • Your promotor discusses the progress of your master's dissertation with you at least three times per academic year.
  • The master's dissertation competences (and the related assessment criteria) are the starting point for the supervision. These master's dissertation competences and their status in the process are defined at a number of fixed moments and discussed with the student:
    • At the start of the dissertation
    • At the Christmas recess, when the competences are reviewed and discussed on the basis of the first draft of the literature review
    • At the Easter recess, when in addition to the literature study, the material and methods section is also assessed and discussed.
  • Your promotor ensures that in all phases of the master's dissertation process, the principles of scientific integrity are correctly applied.
