Personalized Learning Track
What is the difference between a standard learning track (MOT) and a personalized learning track (GIT)?
A standard learning track (MOT) is the designated learning track of a specific study programme. It shows how you can complete the programme in the set duration and which course units you need to take per academic year (= model track year). Which course units belong to which model track year can be consulted in the study guide. To do so, look in the column MT1.
A personalized learning track (GIT) is a learning track that deviates from a standard learning track. It is custom-tailored to suit an individual student.
In a GIT, for example, you combine course units from two different model track years or you take a smaller study package because you want to spread the programme over a longer period.
The student's curriculum can be laid down as a standard or individualised learning track, insofar as the curriculum proposal complies with the GIT rules and the Curriculum Committee agrees to the proposed learning track.
To whom do GIT rules apply at the FBW?
The rules only apply to students who do not yet have a bachelor's degree or a certificate of the preparatory of linking course. And who wish to combine course units from several model track years within those programmes and/or already want to take up course units from the following master's programme.
What are the rules for students already enrolled in an FBW programme?
GIT within the undergraduate programme (GIT ba1-ba2; GIT ba2-ba3; GIT ba1-ba2-ba3)
-
The order of the model tracks must be respected. You first take all course units from the lowest model track year before complementing with course units from the higher model track year.
-
Minimum credit uptake: take at least 27 credits in the curriculum to avoid problems with child support, etc.
- Maximum credit depends on the student's success rate in the previous academic year:
- Study progress rate less than 50%: max. 60 SP
- Study progress rate of 50% or more: max. 75 SP
GIT combining the Bachelor's and Master's programme
- You have acquired credits for all course units from the 1st year of the Bachelor's programme.

What are the rules for new enrolled students in a FBW programme?
First bachelor students
If you start in the first year of the Bachelor's programme, you are obliged to take all course units of the first model track year (60 credits) in your curriculum. It is therefore not possible to take a smaller study load, unless you have a special status (disability, top-level sport activities, etc.) or work-study status.
External GIT
An external GIT is a personalized learning track in which you combine an enrolment at another Flemish university or university college with an enrolment at Ghent University for a successive programme. More information on the enrolment procedure . The curriculum committee will review your application and decide whether or not you can enroll in the external GIT.
GIT combining a Bachelor's programme at another University and a FBW Master's programme
- You have acquired credits for all course units from the 1st year of the Bachelor's programme.
- You must be enrolled in the graduation year of the program that grants admission to the UGent programme.

Hints and tips to put together a GIT
How the programme you enrolled for is structured and more information on the course units is available in the study guide.
Step 1: Check if you meet the requirements to enrol for a GIT
Step 2: Check if you need to retake the practical work of the course units for which you have failed
Contact the lecturer in charge or check Ufora.
Step 3: Make a personal course schedule containing the remaining courses from a study year
Step 4: Check which course units from a higher study year you can take up
- course schedule and examination schedule
Avoid overlapping classes. Try to ensure that your learning track is reasonably balanced between the two semesters.
It may happen that your exams are planned relatively close to each other, due to the fact that you combine course units from more than one study year. Always give priority to the exams of the course units in the lowest study year !
- Successiveness
Within a personalized learning track, one is not always free to choose course units. Successiveness needs to be respected. Successiveness is the sequence in which course units need to be taken, in due consideration of the required initial competences for each course unit. The initial competences for each course unit are described in the course specifications (study guide)
Step 5: Check if your curriculum complies with the rules on composing a learning track
How do I submit a GIT proposal ?
The entire process of re-enrolling, compiling, and submitting a GIT proposal, approving/disapproving is done through OASIS. On the page " FBW curriculum - how to submit? " you will find instructions.
Can I make adjustments to my personalized learning path?
Any requests to change an established curriculum (i.e. adding and/or removing course units) need to be submitted by the student to the Curriculum Committee by e-mail (contact person: Learning Track Counsellor).
Deadlines:
-
before 15 November for first-term course units
-
before 1 March for second term and full-year course units
