Introduction

Stijn Luca Stijn Luca holds a MSc in Mathematics from KU Leuven (2003) and a PhD in Mathematics from Hasselt University (2007). Currently, he is a professor at the Department of Data Analysis and Mathematical Modelling within the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at Ghent University. Previously, he was a postdoctoral fellow at KU Leuven and a visiting scholar at the University of Oxford.

Prof. Stijn Luca leads the BIOSTAT research unit (www.biostat.ugent.be). His research lies at the intersection of statistics and machine learning, delving into the complexities of modeling spatio-temporal data and their extremes. His recent work has centered on point processes, latent variable modeling for spatio-temporal data, spatio-temporal sampling design, and extreme value theory. These developments are driven by environmental challenges in climate and biodiversity research, as well as industrial applications, including the food industry. Previous work also encompasses applications in health informatics.
