New doctoral research with support of FWO
(23-11-2023) Two PhD candidates at CTSE receive support from FWO for their doctoral research, starting from 1 November 2023.
At the beginning of this month, Vita Cooman started her doctoral research at CTSE (Centre for Textile Engineering), in collaboration with Vrije Universiteit Brussel and with support from Research Foundation Flanders - FWO.
My research focuses on the development of novel biobased materials created using robust proteins found on the endospores of bacteria from the Bacillus species. This is done in hopes of achieving strong, biodegradable materials.
Lucas Schynkel also received support from FWO starting from 1 November.
Peripheral nerve injuries lead to the loss of both motor and sensory functions. In severe cases, effective methods for repairing extensively damaged nerves and restoring their functionality are currently lacking. One promising approach is neural tissue engineering; however, to enhance its efficiency, the development of a well-designed scaffold is essential. This research is specifically dedicated to crafting a synthetic, biomimetic nerve conduit utilizing the innovative technique of yarn electrospinning. Through careful optimization of both architecture and composition, the goal is to create an efficient nerve conduit, offering substantial potential benefits for numerous patients.
