Dr. Xavier Garcia Ortega of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona will explain all about Industry 4.0 in industrial biomanufacturing.

The biotechnology industry is at a turning point, facing the challenge of harmonizing biomanufacturing with the transformative advances of Industry 4.0. While traditionally cautious in adopting disruptive technologies, the integration of tools like cloud systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI) promises a revolution in smart biomanufacturing.

These innovations are poised to reshape the landscape, enabling adaptive and data-driven approaches to process verification and optimization.

This seminar will spotlight advancements in microbial fermentation for recombinant protein production (RPP), using Pichia pastoris, a preferred microbial host for FDA-approved therapeutic and food applications.

A novel AI-driven control strategy based on respiratory quotient (RQ) monitoring has been developed, optimizing fermentation under hypoxic conditions to achieve over 2-fold increases in productivity and yield for a model protein, lipase 1 from Candida rugosa.
