Prof Richard Morris will give a talk on his work to unravel the physics of long-distance communication in plants.

Abstract

Plants use internal communication systems to adjust their growth and development in response to various stimuli. To transmit information to distal parts of the plant they use a variety of signals. I will focus on recent results relating to an electrical signal known as a variation potential.
I will demonstrate how simple mathematical models have allowed us to evaluate different hypotheses and put forward new ideas for the underlying mechanisms. Similar ideas and models will be expanded to explain long-distance calcium waves. These models and mechanisms provide new insights into how information is transmitted throughout the plant.

Prof Morris will be available for meetings with students at the FSVM I building (Technologiepark 71) from 14:00 until 17:00 on 25 October. Please contact steven.maere@psb.vib-ugent.be.
